A Whole New (Previously Published) World

I’ve always had the utmost respect for self-published authors, and it is growing by the minute.

Self-publishing has gone through quite the changes over the last… will we call it ten years? Fifteen? When did Amazon start KDP – hang on.

A quick Ecosia reveals the publishing juggernaut has been up and at it since 2007, so 18 years. Yikes!

I don’t think I got into the swing of reading digitally until I got my first Kindle Fire. I had a Paperwhite that I loathed and one of those Sony things that I wanted to smash with a hammer. (I didn’t; I may still have it, though, so I’m not making any promises it will never happen.)

Back in 2013, I submitted That Magic Mischief to Crimson Romance, a digital only publisher, and they accepted it, which had been great. It had been rejected by Headline, who had published my first two novels, and I didn’t give up, because every time I felt like I should, I sat down and gave ‘er a read and actually enjoyed revisiting the story.

And I was more than happy to let someone else do all the work of ISBNs and designing and uploading and all that.

I was more than happy to re-publish via my literary agency when I got the rights to TMM back. None of that ISBN-ing for me, thanks! I had started looking into self-pub when I was writing The Shapeshifters of the Beau Monde series and ugh, why would you want to take on all that responsibility?

All this is to say, guess what I’m doing now, and what with?

I have left that agency and regained my sole rights (again), so why not toss ‘er back into the publishing pool, this time with me doing all the other work involved in bringing a book to market?

WHY NOT INDEED.

I’m still not sure about a re-re-release date, but I am in love with the new cover! I have the layout for print-on-demand prepped for proofreading, and am currently in a battle to the death with the ePub format. So if you never hear from me again, you know who won.

I will probably send along another newsletter outlining the process, if I survive the digital design process.

Luckily I’m not wrangling the whole novel into reflowable shape, but am practicing on a connected short story that will serve as a fun giveaway when the time is right.

So yeah, watch this space – and respect your local independent author because this is so much work!
