Happy New Year Sale! and Heated Rivalry

A Wolf in Duke’s Clothing in eBook form is over on Bookbub for ¢99

I guess my former publisher has organised this? A pleasant surprise!

Please see here for links to your preferred eBook purveyor, available for a limited time.

Not sure how limited the time is, as I only found out about this sale thanks to the book having been recommended on Bookbub by the wonderful Grace Burrowes (whose books are perfection, if you are a fan of Regency Era romance); they used her rec as a springboard to make a lil marketing email, which is gratifying…

…and leads into a Topic Of Some Annoyance, about which I wrote on Threads, but will happily rehash here.

I had the good fortune to be in the States for holiday time and thus was able to binge Heated Rivalry. When picture rolled on the first episode, I was filled with such joy for author Rachel Reid, I honestly wept a little all over my face.

I am a fan of her Game Changers series, having read them all and have often gone back to the titular title, because of the masterful pacing and the lead-up to the queer happy ending in the cottage (IYKYK).

M/M romance is a massive category in the romance genre, and for the ‘hockey gay love story’ touch so many, and absolutely tear the stuffing out of the viewing charts was utterly thrilling for me as a reader.

As a writer? It’s the feckin’ dream.

So imagine my dismay when I learned, from social media, that there were no books? Like, no hard copies for avid fans who wanted to read the source material, or for those of us who read on digital and maybe wanted the actual printed thing to own.

No books, anywhere. And in cases where books had been shipped, there were only like sixteen per bookshop, or something?

Imagine my shock when I went to Harlequin’s site and the series wasn’t on the home page??*

Imaggggiiiiiine having a roaring success and not showcasing it? And not doing the thing that all querying authors — whether of literary agents of publishing companies — have to do, which is cite comps of your work, that is: hot titles that are most like your own, to prove that your title is saleable and marketable?

Can you IMAGINE anything more saleable and marketable than anything Harlequin might have on their list that syncs with Reid’s series? I cannot.

(Can you hear my fingers absolutely thumping on my keyboard???)

If anyone wonders why publishing is in a perilous state, look no further. Harlequin have made a shambles of this opportunity.

What an insult to their writer. What an insult to readers. No wonder so many authors are choosing to go indie. (Ahem.)

Okay, I need to go sit down and hydrate. So much is asked of authors these days, from not only producing publishable material, to also creating platforms to market it which is of course a whole job itself, and being expected to smash it on BookTok or whatever.

/rant. Wow, I am still so mad about this. Take what you like and leave the rest, I guess.

If nothing else, I am so happy for all involved in the show, and the way that Reid has been kept in the picture (lol) the whole way. Here’s to Season 2 in 2027!

See here for the sale, again. Sure, a link costs nothing.

*Still not up on the site! Honestly! Their Insta is making an effort, to be fair.

  1. […] Reid, author of the Game Changers series, has been left short by her publishers, Harlequin. See here for the full rant; I can feel my blood pressure rising all over […]
